∆ Ans-> W. H. Auden wrote a poem called "September 1, 1939" about a sad time before World War II. The poem takes place in a bar in New York City where people go to relax. But even here, they feel worried about the war.

The date, September 1, 1939, is important because it's when World War II began with Germany attacking Poland. This date adds to the poem's feeling of worry and fear.

The poem talks a lot about love. Auden says that love is really important, especially when things are tough. He believes that without love, people would feel lost and unhappy.

There's a line in the poem that says "We must love one another or die." This means that love is crucial for our survival. Without it, life would be dark and sad.

Auden also talks about hope in the poem. He calls it "ironic points of light." These are little moments of happiness and kindness that shine through, even in hard times. They remind us that there's still good in the world.

Overall, Auden's poem makes us think about how important love and hope are, especially when things seem dark. It's a reminder to be kind to each other and to keep hoping for a better future.

∆ Here are responses to the questions:
~Part 1: Pre-screening
1. Have you read the novel "1984" by George Orwell? If yes, what did you think of it? If no, what do you know about the story?

Ans-> No, I haven't read the novel "1984" by George Orwell. However, I know that it's a classic dystopian story set in a society where the government controls everything and monitors it's citizens closely. The protagonist, Winston Smith, rebels against this oppressive regime in search of freedom and individuality.

2. Have you watched any adoptations of "1984" before? If yes, which ones and what did you think of them? If no, what do you expect from this adaptation?

Ans-> No, I haven't watched any adoptations of "1984" But if I were to imagine what they might be like, I would expect them to show a society where the government controls everything and people struggle against it. It would probably be intense and thought-provoking, making viewers think about the dangers of too much power in the hands of a few.

3. What themes or ideas do you think are central to "1984"? Why?

Ans-> The themes of dystopian and totalitarianism are central themes of "1984" because they show a scary world where the government has all the power and controls everything. It's like a big warning about what could happen if leaders become too controlling and take away people's freedom. So these themes are key because they make us think about the importance of freedom.

~ Part 2: Screening
1. As you watch the film, take note of any major differences from the novel. How do these changes affect the story?

Ans-> In the movie version of "1984", they made Julia more sympathetic and less rebellious than in the book. This changes show how she interacts with Winston and the overall tone of their relationship.
In the movie "1984", the ending is more hopeful compared to the book. It suggests the possibility of resistance and change, giving the story a different tone and massage. They wanted to leave the audience with a sense of hope.

2. How does the film's visual style and cinematography contribute to the story? What mood or tone does it create?

Ans-> In movie "1984", They made it look dark and gloomy, with not a lot of colours. The camera angles and close-ups make it feel like someone's always watching. It all creates a mood that's really heavy and oppressive.

3. Compare the portrayal of the main characters in the film to your mental image of them from the novel. How they similar or different?

Ans-> In the movie, the main characters are similar to how they're portrayed in the book. Winston, the protagonist, is all about questioning the Big Brother government and wanting freedom.

4. What elements from the novel did the film adaptation include or exclude? Where there any major plot points that were left out?

Ans-> The movie included a lot of stuff from the book, but there were a few things that they left out. One big thing was the character sume, who's important in the book but not in the movie. The movie also focused more on the love story between Winston and Julia, while the book explores other parts of life under the main idea, but it's not exactly the same as book.

~ Part 3: Post-screening
1. What do you think are the strengths and weaknesses of this film adaptation? How does it compare to other adaptation of "1984"?

Ans-> The movie "1984" by Radford has some good things about it. The way it looks and how the camera is used make it really interesting to watch. The actors also did a great job, especially John Hurt as Winston. But some people think the movie leaves out important stuff from the book, like the character sume. Julia is different too, she's not as rebellious.

2. How successful was the film in conveying the central themes and ideas of the novel? Were there any aspects that the film failed to capture?

Ans-> The movie "1984" by Radford did a pretty good job of showing the main ideas from the book. It made you feel the gloomy and controlling world of the Party. The way it looked and the camera work helped create that feeling. But there were some things missing, like the depth of the characters and some important parts of the story. So, while it got some things right, it didn't capture everything from the book.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway

This  blog task is part of thinking activity and given by Megha Ma'am. I'll do my utmost to respond to the questions.
1. Critical analysis of the end of the novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
Ans-> The novel ends with a powerful and tragic climax that leaves readers contemplating the harsh realities of war and the human spirit.

As the story reaches its climax, Robert Jordan, the protagonist, finds himself in a dire situation. He is wounded and surrounded by enemy forces, yet he remains determined to complete his mission. The tension builds as he prepares to blow up a bridge, knowing that it will likely cost him his life.

In the final moments, Jordan reflects on his experiences and the meaning of his actions. He contemplates the beauty of life and the importance of fighting for what one believes in, even in the face of death. The prose captures the intensity of the moment, as Hemingway skillfully portrays Jordan's inner thoughts and emotions.

Ultimately, Jordan fulfills his duty and detonates the explosives, sacrificing himself for the cause he believes in. The novel ends with a sense of both tragedy and hope, as the remaining characters grapple with the loss of their comrade and the uncertain future ahead.

Hemingway's portrayal of the end of the novel is poignant and thought-provoking. It raises questions about the nature of heroism, the cost of war, and the complexities of human existence. The ending leaves readers with a sense of melancholy and a deeper understanding of the human condition.

2. In what ways the flashback technique was used in "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
Ans-> In "For Whom the Bell Tolls," Ernest Hemingway skillfully employs the flashback technique to provide insight into the characters' pasts and deepen our understanding of their motivations and experiences. Through these flashbacks, Hemingway creates a more layered narrative and enhances the emotional impact of the story.

One notable example of the flashback technique in the novel is when Robert Jordan reflects on his time spent with his lover, Maria, and their experiences together. These flashbacks offer glimpses into their relationship and provide context for their actions in the present. By interweaving these memories with the main narrative, Hemingway allows us to see the characters' growth and the impact of their past on their present circumstances.

Additionally, the use of flashbacks helps to develop the supporting characters in the novel. For instance, we learn about Anselmo's past as a soldier through his recollections, which adds depth to his character and helps us understand his perspective on the current events. The flashbacks also shed light on the complexities of the Spanish Civil War and the personal histories of the characters involved.

Overall, the flashback technique in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" serves to enrich the storytelling by providing a deeper understanding of the characters' backgrounds and motivations. It adds a layer of complexity to the narrative and enhances the emotional resonance of the novel.

3. Explain: Robert Jordan as a Typical Hemingway Hero.

Firstly, Robert Jordan exhibits a sense of stoicism and courage in the face of adversity. He is a skilled and brave soldier who remains steadfast and determined, even in the midst of danger and uncertainty. This resilience and bravery are traits commonly found in Hemingway's heroes.

Secondly, Robert Jordan values honor and duty. He is committed to his mission and believes in fighting for a cause greater than himself. He demonstrates a strong sense of loyalty to his comrades and is willing to make personal sacrifices for the greater good. This sense of honor and duty is a recurring theme in Hemingway's works.

Additionally, Robert Jordan possesses a strong sense of self-reliance and individualism. He is a man of action, capable of making decisions and taking responsibility for his own fate. He relies on his own skills and instincts, often distancing himself from societal norms and expectations. This emphasis on individualism is a characteristic trait of Hemingway's heroes.

Lastly, Robert Jordan's experiences and emotions are often expressed through understatement and a focus on the physical. Hemingway's heroes tend to exhibit a certain emotional restraint and rely on actions and physical sensations to convey their inner turmoil.                     In summary, Robert Jordan embodies many of the qualities that define a typical Hemingway hero. His stoicism, courage, sense of honor, self-reliance, and understated emotions align with the characteristics often associated with Hemingway's protagonists.
