Aristotle's Poetics

∆ Have you studied any tragedies during B.A. programme? Who was the tragic protagonist in those tragedies? What was their'Hamartia'?

Ans-  In my BA program, I delved into "King Lear," a Shakespearean tragedy portraying the tale of an elderly ruler opting to distribute his realm among his three daughters, guided by their declarations of affection towards him. In "King Lear," the tragic protagonists are King Lear, Goneril, and Regan. Let's delve into their tragic flaws or hamartia in more detail:
1. King Lear:
   - Hamartia: Lear's tragic flaw is his pride and inability to see beyond flattery. In the opening scene, he makes a grave error by dividing his kingdom based on how much his daughters profess to love him. His misjudgment of his daughters' characters, coupled with his stubbornness, leads to his downfall.

2. Goneril:
   - Hamartia: Goneril's tragic flaw lies in her insatiable ambition and ruthless pursuit of power. She is willing to betray her own father for political gain, displaying a lack of filial piety and moral values. This ambition ultimately leads to her downfall as well.

3. Regan:
   - Hamartia: Regan shares similarities with Goneril, as her tragic flaw also revolves around ambition and cruelty. Her willingness to mistreat her father and participate in the malicious actions against him highlights her moral corruption. This, too, contributes to her tragic end.

The play, as a whole, explores themes of power, familial relationships, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. The tragic flaws of these characters intertwine, creating a complex narrative of betrayal and suffering.
